Until a few years ago, there was a strong belief that Marathi people found satisfaction in pulling each other down. However, this notion is now gradually breaking to some extent. Maharashtra has repeatedly produced legendary business figures. Many of these entrepreneurs remain unknown to us today, but their achievements cannot be denied.
Industrialist Walchand Hirachand, the Kirloskar brothers who introduced iron ploughs, Abasaheb Garware, Baba Kalyani of Bharat Forge, the Pendharkar family of Vicco, the Dandekar family of Camlin, Deepak Ghaisas of iFlex, Ashok Khade of Das Offshore, Sanjay Ghodawat of Ghodawat Group, the Pathare brothers of VIP Clothing, Eknath Thakur of Saraswat Bank, Vishnudas Bhave, who revolutionized Marathi theatre, the Date family selling Date Panchang, the Prabhudesai family of Pitambari, Hanmantrao Gaikwad of BVG, Ramdas Mane of Mane Group, Haware Groupโthe list of Marathi entrepreneurs is endless.
However, when we analyze these entrepreneurs, one common factor stands out: most of them are first-generation entrepreneurs. They could not effectively pass on their businesses to the next generation, nor had their previous generations engaged in business. As a result, they lacked substantial family support. Despite this, these entrepreneurs dared to dream big, worked hard to achieve their goals, pursued their dreams relentlessly, and ultimately achieved the success they desired. This is why we must not get discouraged but instead, walk the path they have paved.
It is true that family opposition arises when starting a business. However, family members do not oppose you out of ill will; rather, they do so out of concern for you because they, too, lack business experience. They may have seen examples of failed businesses but never deeply analyzed the reasons behind those failures. Family members are often more concerned about your spouse than they are about you. They want to relieve themselves of responsibility by ensuring you are settled, which is why they constantly push for your marriage.

Now, letโs look at some ways to reduce family opposition and gain their support. Some common reasons for opposition include income uncertainty, lack of capital, and inexperience. One way to overcome opposition is by earning substantial money and contributing to the household, as financial stability naturally lessens resistance. It is only natural for family members to expect you to earn money. Try to gain the trust of the most emotionally connected person in your family and explain your business plans thoroughly. If you can convince this person that you are capable of running a business, they will eventually help you secure support from other family members. Once you win their trust, you will gain the confidence to persuade anyone about your business, and gradually, they will influence others in the family to support you.
In Gujarati, Marwari, Punjabi, and Sindhi families, the home environment itself is business-friendly, reducing their struggles significantly. This is why, if a group of people start a business together, they should explain it to each other’s families. When families see that a friend from the neighborhood or college is also involved in the business, they feel reassured and believe in your capability.
Another crucial point-
Regardless of whether your family supports or opposes you, your complete focus should remain on growing your business and taking the necessary steps for success. Even if your family does not support you initially, they will eventually come around. This has been the case everywhereโit is history. And now, it is your turn to rewrite this history. Wishing you immense success in your journey!
